About Therapy

Psychotherapy is an interpersonal, relational intervention used by trained psychotherapists to help people recover from mental and emotional stresses and bring an increase in contentment to their lives. This usually includes increasing individual sense of well-being, insight into recurring problems, and developing plans to optimize individual potential. Psychotherapists employ a range of techniques based on experiential relationship building, dialogue, communication and behavior change that are designed to improve the mental health of a client or patient or to improve group relationships (such as in a family or social situation). Therapy is generally used to respond to a variety of specific or non-specific symptoms of clinically diagnosable crises. Treatment of everyday problems is often referred to as counseling but the term is sometimes used interchangeably with "psychotherapy."
